#FactsMatter237 Fellows

It all started in 2020 with #FactsMatter237 with a vision of educating bloggers, content creators, and community leaders on information verification, fact-checking, data journalism, and digital rights educating media professionals, both online and offline in Cameroon. #FactsMatter237 was aimed at monitoring and mapping viral trends on social media related to the key thematic issues in Cameroon. After the outburst of the Anglophone crisis in 2016 and the 2018 presidential elections, the social media space in Cameroon was full of hate speech, misinformation, incitement to violence, and violent extremism. #FactsMatter237 came in to join other existing platforms like Data Cameroon, STOPBLABLACAM, Stopintox.cm to create awareness on #MIL. With 7 fellows Pedmia Shatu, Tarhyang Tabe, Frank William Batchou, Fotso Fonkam, Marc Ghislain, Armelle Sitchoma, and Romuald Landry Nguemkap, the train was on the move. Following the success of the #FactsMatter fellowship and the feedback from partners and fellows, the program was renamed Africa Fact-checking fellowship. It later moved to #AFFCameroon with fellows from cohorts one to ten. Dedicated fellows who found the training interesting, adventurous, and full of discoveries. Fellows worked hard to write Social Media Health Reports, which are all about information online that could affect the country and that made a lot of noise in the social media space. Additionally, they fact-checked articles that are published on the 237Check website. Fellows had specialised meetups in their various communities. They organised meetings with youths, students, pupils, women, community leaders, etc., to share the dangers of spreading false information, propagating hate speech, and the wrong use of social media. The meetups helped fellows understand and master the work better.

#FactsMatter237 fellows become cohort 1 fellows of #AFFCameroon.

The #AfricaFactCheckingFellowship (AFFCameroon) is an initiative by #defyhatenow started in partnership with Data Cameroon and Paul Joel Kamtchang being the main trainer at that time was aimed at promoting fact-checking, data journalism, and digital rights among journalists, bloggers, and content creators in Africa. Fellows of each cohort had a three-month program that was geared towards providing fellows with skill sets and tools needed to tackle misinformation challenges in their countries and communities. AFFCameroon programs consist of three main stages, each running through one month and ending with a particular assignment. From discovery to practical sessions, and going to the field. They fellows had an assignment to share knowledge learned with their communities and bring feedback and difficulties encountered.

Fellows have been trained from all regions in Cameroon, and as such, #AFFCameroon fellows can be spotted in each region in the national territory, including Chad.

#AFFCameroon Fellows in Session

Under the coordination of Donald Tchiengue and supervision of Dr. Ngala Desmond Ngala, AFFCameroon moved to the grand North which was termed “ Special Grand Nord”. ‘Special,’ because of its distance and many youths from that region were not very much versed with how to use the internet, how to email and use social media. It brought about journalists from Maroua, Garoua and Ngoundere and it was a beautiful experience for fellows who asked for more of such training. The training in the grand North gave light to “ Septentrion Check” founded by some of the fellows trained by #237Check in Garoua.

Digital Coordinator Donald Tchiengue with AFFCameroon cohort 10 fellows in session.

Aside from training and fact checking, the AFFCameroon program shed more on how they could behave online, communicate and post. After the training, fellows produced documentaries and television and radio programs like; Junior Haussin Noulapoum Kuaye’s programm, who presents a fact checked articles on Wednesdays entitled “OUI ou NON” on the Canal 2 International television channel., a documentary by Jabi Katy Chale titled: Breaking The Silence: A Survivor’s Journey Against Hate. By 2024, 250 fellows had been trained with each having a positive impact on their professional as well as private life and it has reached 20,000 people through its community engagement. Other fellows, such as Mbuh Stella and Badal Fohmoh have created fact checking pages “ Factbox” and “ Class Pro,” respectively on facebook and X ( formerly Twitter), where they share fact checking tips. Some Cohort 9 fellows, passionate about the training and knowledge they gained during their time at #AFFCameroon, created an initiative after their training known as “Facthunters.”

This initiative is aimed at sensitizing online users about hate speech, misinformation, disinformation, and the importance of fact-checking.

Dr. Ngala Desmond Ngala #defyhatenow Cameroon Country Project Manager in session with Fellows

Two major #AFFCameroon conferences were organised in 2022 under the theme “Toward a Synergy of Actions Against Mis/Disinformation and the Spread of Hate Speech for Peace and Development in Cameroon,” followed by the 2024 edition held under the theme, “Combating Digital Threats to Elections in Cameroon: Strategies to Fight Disinformation During the Electoral Period.”

These impactful gatherings brought together public and private institutions, diplomatic missions, international and regional organizations, civil society organisations, educational institutions, media professionals, and AFFCameroon Fellows. The aim was to create a synergy of actions and find effective solutions to reduce the negative effects of misinformation and disinformation on lasting peace and social cohesion in Cameroon and Africa at large.

Through plenary sessions, workshops, insightful masterclasses, and rich networking opportunities, the conferences made participants determined and afresh to tackle disinformation. Fellows left with renewed zeal to amplify their work online, fact-check information thoroughly, and actively debunk fake news. For many, the events offered a deeper understanding of what fact-checking truly involves, how misinformation and disinformation are spread, and practical ways to identify and reduce them.

Importantly, the conferences paved the way for new partnerships with fact-checking organizations, government bodies, civil society organisations, individuals, and private institutions. We remain open to even more collaborations and sponsorships, particularly to extend our reach into underdeveloped areas of Cameroon. These are places where misinformation, hate speech, and violent extremism are the order of the day, but awareness and sensitization remain low.

Our vision is to reach these communities, especially those with limited access to information or the internet, and empower them with the tools to access, assess, and share accurate information both in their communities and online.

#AFFCameroon Conference.

AFFCameroon wins the 2025 #MIL Impact Award prize in Marseille, France, it is a milestone achievement that deserves celebration by doubling efforts and engaging more communities across Africa to promote safe online spaces, digital rights, and a #HateFreeAfrica.

This award comes at a time when Cameroon’s social media space is overwhelmed with hateful content stemming from intertribal conflicts and political rivalries, as the country faces election fever. This is a crucial period that calls for increased action from the #defyhatenow AFFCameroon program and its fellows to ensure the elections proceed smoothly and peacefully.

It requires intensified sensitization on the responsible use of social media, the importance of thinking before clicking (#ThinkB4UClick), staying respectful, valuing others’ opinions, and correcting misinformation or harmful content online in a respectful manner.

Hello Everyone,

As a result, my report on youth and hate speech won Best Story on Peace and Peaceful Coexistence at the 2023 ABC Awards. I also produced a documentary on hate speech’s impact on young people, was awarded Best Documentary at the 2024 Camraise Academy Awards, and received the Video4Peace Award from Defyhatenow. In the same year, I was named Peace Journalist of the Year at the Victoria International Media Merit Awards.

Written by Vera Mbong

As Cameroon approaches the pivotal election year of 2025, the urgency for a safe and informed digital environment cannot be overstated. The digital landscape is bubbling with potential for dialogue and community engagement, but it also harbors threats in the form of #HateSpeech and #Misinformation. In this context, it’s crucial for internet users to embrace the mantra: “#ThinkB4UClick” This campaign calls upon every individual to play an active role in shaping a hate-free digital space that promotes values such as empathy, tolerance, unity, and love.

Take part in the campaign here: https://campaigns.defyhatenow.org/campaigns/thinkb4uclick

Why the Importance of #ThinkingB4UClick

Hasty clicks can lead to the spread of damaging information. Misinformation, when shared without critical thought, can fan the flames of division and conflict, particularly in politically sensitive times like election periods. Fact-checking and verifying information before sharing online is essential. Here’s why:

Preventing Misinformation: By verifying the authenticity of information, we can stop the spread of false narratives that mislead and confuse.

Promoting Responsible Dialogue: Careful consideration before sharing encourages meaningful discussions rather than inflammatory ones, transforming social media into a platform for thoughtful engagement.

Upholding Truth: Sharing verified content upholds the integrity of information and helps individuals become trusted sources within their communities.

Build Trust and confidence in digital Space

Creating Safe Digital Spaces

Building safe digital environments is a collective responsibility. Here are some actionable steps to promote safe online spaces in Cameroon:

Empower Yourself and Others with Knowledge: Engage in digital literacy programs that educate individuals about the dangers of misinformation and the importance of safe online practices.

Practice Empathy and Tolerance: As we share our opinions, let’s remember that understanding others’ perspectives is vital to fostering a peaceful online atmosphere. Empathy leads to constructive conversations and reduces the likelihood of escalating conflicts.

Engage in Positive Participation: Use your online presence to uplift others. Share positive messages and informative content, creating an online culture that values respect over hate.

Stand Up Against Hate Speech: Together, we can create an online community that does not tolerate hate speech. Report any hateful or toxic content, and encourage others to do the same.

The three-month program aims to provide fellows with the skills and tools to address the current challenges of misinformation in their communities.

To mitigate misinformation, hate speech and initiate campaigns to raise awareness and promote positive public discourse, social cohesion with the aim of improving the quality of information available in the media and online in Cameroon, the #defyhatenow initiative through r0g agency has launched the Africa Fact-checking Fellowship #AFFCameroon; whose aim is to promote fact-checking, data journalism and digital rights among journalists, bloggers and content creators in Africa. The three-month program aims to provide fellows with the skills and tools to address the current challenges of misinformation in their communities.

The actions of #defyhatenow against misinformation in Cameroon have contributed significantly to the promotion of media and information literacy and fact-checking in Cameroon’s socio-media landscape through training sessions at #AFFCameroon, where articles written by the fellows are published on the 237check platform. The program has attracted international interest, with coordinator Donald Tchiengue invited to Mauritius and South Africa for conferences on Factchecking. Created in January 2020 under the name #FactsMatter237, the quarterly training implemented in Cameroon by a youth-led organization, Civic Watch, has so far trained over 170 journalists, bloggers, content creators, community leaders and digital rights activists in the program.

During the training period, which typically lasts three months, fellows are expected to deliver three main outputs: the production of a fact-checking report, the analytical mapping of viral trends through a social media health report, and community outreach in the form of specialized meet-ups. The training received positive feedback from the Fellows, who were keen to testify to the improved quality of their content on social media and in their work as journalists and content creators. But what’s most interesting about their feedback is the palpable impact this program has had for the Fellows and their community. In highlighting some of the successes, we’d like to point out that, after the training, some fellows like Fotso Fonkam, Hemes Nkwa, Badal Fomoh and Patricia Ngo Ngouem had the opportunity to be called outside the country to share their knowledge with fact checkers from other countries about their experiences in the Cameroonian context, while others, thanks to their mastery of fact-checking techniques, have now become trainers, mentors and even coordinators, such as Mbu Stella, Pedmia Shatu and Frank William Batchom.

It’s also important to note that because of the reputation the #AFFCameroon Fellowship has been able to build so far, one of Africa’s largest Fact checking organizations (Africa Check) has selected us for the Google ToT project this year to train more journalists, bloggers, content creators and even members of civil society organizations through a series of Masterclasses on verifying information by navigating digital platforms. This fruitful collaboration comes hot on the heels of the implementation of the Check Global Independent Media Response project with the Meedan Organization to combat misinformation on climate change issues.

It should be noted that thanks to this #AFFCameroon training program and its 237 Check verification platform, #defyhatenow is part of the African verification networks Africa Facts Network and Africa Factchecking Alliance -AFCA.

In this article, we will highlight those who in their various fields, chose to incorporate or amplify their knowledge of factchecking in their work and those who, thanks to the program, were able to create their own platforms for verifying and debunking information within their respective communities. The lines below highlight some of the Fellows who made a positive impact during and after the training;

#AFFCAMEROON SUCCESS STORIES

Donald Tchiengue, #AFFCameroon Cohort 5

Donald Tchiengue is a success story of the #AFFCameroon program, of which he is the main coordinator to date. Indeed, his journey in the practice of Factchecking began with his selection for this program in the 5th cohort. His determination, the critical thinking skills he regularly exhibits on his blog www.tchienguereports.com and his passion for truth and accurate information, have helped him to make a significant mark and become one of the most respected trainers in this crucial field in Cameroon and beyond.

Thanks to his commitment, Donald Tchiengue is regularly called upon for conferences, seminars and training workshops where he is called upon to train journalists, bloggers, activists and other media professionals. Recruited for the #defyhatenow initiative as digital project Coordinator, he is renowned for conceptualizing and implementing projects focusing on digital and the responsible use of ICT for peace and social cohesion. Furthermore, as coordinator of the #AFFCameroon fact-checking program, he works to create and update interactive training courses adapted to different audiences, to help everyone understand the importance of fact-checking and use the tools needed to detect false information. His practical approach and sound advice have enabled many individuals and organizations to embark on rigorous verification processes. Thanks to his work with media players, he is helping to improve the quality of information disseminated and to develop strategies that can help build public confidence in the media and reliable sources of information in Cameroon.

After a regional training course covering the North, Adamaoua and Far North of Cameroon, four fellows decided to create a television programme designed to verify the information broadcast online and offline. After a few broadcasts on Galaxy TV Media Group, the group recently introduced the project’s new website and social media platforms. Septentrion Echos is recruiting more Fellows to be trained in educating the public about the responsible use of technology for peace, promoting social cohesion and countering the spread of misinformation.

During the second #AFFCameroon conference, the Septentrion check team made its presence felt by sharing its experience at the meeting. Jérôme Baïmélé, the Septentrion check representative, spoke of the team’s relentless work in media education and the fight against fake news, disinformation and misinformation in Cameroon’s northern region. Septentrion check’s participation in the #AFFCameroon conference was an opportunity not only to sharpen up for the forthcoming elections, but also to present its day-to-day actions in the fight against fake news in their regions.

As a member of several youth networks such as Mandela Washington Fellowship, she uses her knowledge, skills and network to be an innovative changemaker in Cameroon and Africa. Her experience with #AFFCameroon was pivotal in her professional journey. It was, indeed, the first professional fact-checking training she received when she joined the programme in 2021. She narrates that this training has opened doors for her to numerous prestigious courses and subsequently led her to become a consultant and trainer for several major projects nationally in Cameroon and internationally as well and thanks to this training she felt motivated to create a fact-checking platform to health related information verification. As a medical professional, combating misinformation is crucial to ensuring equitable access to quality information for the population.

Junior Haussin Noulapoum Kuaye is a 33-year-old Cameroonian national. He works as a journalist for CANAL2International and specialises in Factcheking and literary issues. He currently presents the Factcheking section entitled OUI ou NON on the Canal 2 International television channel.

Junior Haussin is a writer and the author of two books: La plume Noire de L’encrier (2017) and Banane malaxée (2020). He is currently President of the National Network of Literary Journalists of Cameroon and Head of the Literary Arts Unit for the Littoral region of Cameroon.

Junior Haussin is a member of the 6th cohort of the #AFFCameroon programme, a programme that has been very useful to him in handling news within the television channel that employs him. Today, thanks to the tools he acquired during his training periods with #AFFCameroon, he has been able to set up a fact-checking column in the Canal 2 International news programme. The column is called Oui ou Non and is broadcast every Wednesday in the 19h50 news programme. Join him whenever you can and you won’t regret it.

Badal Fomoh #AFFCameroon Fellow Cohort 5 / https://www.classpro.be/

Badal is an award-winning sports and culture blogger with a passion for communicating and popularising local football. She has worked for leading news organisations covering a wide range of topics including culture, sport and societal issues.

Addicted to new media and obsessed with inclusion and equality, in 2020, when I applied to the #AFFCameroon programme, she could hardly have imagined the impact this training would have on her life, it has been a total transformation. The experience has been so beneficial that it has not only broadened her perspectives but also strengthened her conviction that bloggers can play a significant role in this field. During the course, she says she met some remarkable people among both the fellows and the trainers, and their passion for fact-checking and dedication during the practical sessions were a real source of inspiration. Writing a fact-checking article was one of the most important moments, allowing her to realise that her blogging skills can help promote truth and transparency in a world where misinformation is omnipresent.

Drawing on this experience, through which she discovered different ways of combating hate speech and misinformation, she set about setting up an initiative dedicated to combating these scourges through media education. And so, on 18 August 2022, Class Pro was born. Today Class Pro is more than just an initiative, it’s an association in the process of being legalised, with the ambition of building a civilised, responsible and egalitarian cyberspace where no form of violence has a place.

Committed to developing positive relations with the media, Badal recently contributed to the drafting of a charter on fact-checking and media education, and is often invited to speak at events. As well as touring stadiums, raising awareness and providing training, she enjoys travelling, reading books and discovering new cuisines.

Ngufack Temngwa #AFFCameroon Fellow Cohort 8 / www.camerooncheck.org

Prior to joining the #AFFCameroon Fellowship, she had limited knowledge of fact-checking and its methodologies. However, her professional life took a momentous turn when Prof. Che Tita from the university of Buea introduced her to the essence of fact checking. Under his guidance as the founder of Cameroon Check, a fact-checking platform she now manages, he enlightened her on the significance of accuracy. Prof. Che Tita serves as a mentor, teacher, and a constant source of inspiration. His unwavering support has been instrumental in helping her surmount obstacles and daringly explore uncharted territories.

The training offered by the fellowship was more than just training. It was a transformative journey of self discovery. She says to have been equipped with the skills and knowledge to become an assertive fact checker. The sessions, both physical and online, covered the theoretical foundations of fact checking and provided practical tools and techniques to verify information. With a surge of emotions proud of what she has learned and accomplished, confident in her ability to fact check anything and everything, she is passionate about each fact checking report she has been able to produce, knowing that it has a unique approach and a valuable contribution.

The training went beyond technical skills, giving her the ability to analyze information from multiple perspectives by teaching her to question, challenge, and seek the truth amidst the noise of misinformation. It has enhanced her research skills, permitting her to dig deep into complex topics and present evidence based information to the public.

Throughout the fellowship, the organizers created a nurturing environment that fostered growth and collaboration. They encouraged teamwork, recognizing the power of collective efforts in the fight against misinformation. The mentors, with their wealth of experience, were always available to offer guidance and support, ensuring that no fellow was left behind.

The impact of the fellowship reaches far beyond the training sessions. It has empowered her to take Cameroon Check to new heights. Armed with the knowledge and skills gained, managing the platform has become a more purposeful and impactful endeavour. With over 50 fact checking reports and social media health reports published, reaching individuals hungry for accurate information in a sea of falsehood has been such a soothing experience for her.

Narrating the impact that the fellowship has provided her with, she mentions the incredible opportunities to contribute to interviews, research projects and connecting with experts in the domain has been of great benefit. These experiences have solidified her commitment to the fight against misinformation, fueling her determination to make a lasting impact in the field of fact checking.

Flooded with deep gratitude, she appreciates Prof. Che Tita’s steadfast belief in her abilities and the unwavering support of the African Fact Checking Fellowship #AFFCameroon has served as a catalyst for her personal and professional growth.

A graduate of the École supérieure de journalisme in Lille, he works as a consultant in the design and distribution of digital editorial content. For nearly fifteen years, he has been helping organisations of all kinds (media, international organisations, NGOs, associations, SMEs) to build a high-quality online presence for their content and presentation.

Although his profession has made him aware of fact-checking issues from the very beginning, he wanted to learn more about these techniques following the problematic election period of 2018. That’s how he discovered the #defyhatenow initiative in 2019 by taking part in its activities for the first time. In October 2023, he had the privilege of being selected as a fellow in the 9th cohort of the #AFFCameroon fact-check and for the fight against hate speech.

He explains that the knowledge he has gained from this training has changed the way he receives and processes information. He says he is now much more attentive to the meaning of the words, terms and expressions he uses in his interactions with colleagues and in the content he posts online. He says he also acts as an awareness-raiser for people who are not up to date with reality, the spread of fake news and the dangers it poses to social harmony. René is currently working on a project that he hopes to achieve between now and the presidential election in Cameroon in 2025: the production of a podcast, in the form of a series of reports on the issues at stake in the fight against disinformation in Cameroon.

Fabrice Bwamou, Self-taught Graphic Designer, Blogger, Secretary General of the Association des Blogueurs du Cameroun. As Secretary General of the Cameroon Bloggers Association, Fabrise is committed to promoting blogging both in Cameroon and abroad. On a daily basis, he assists entrepreneurs, bloggers, journalists and community managers by teaching them how to create attractive visuals that sell without requiring in-depth knowledge of graphic design.

In 2023, his blog http://www.photoshopourtoutfaire.com/ celebrated its fifth anniversary, marking an important milestone in his commitment to the online community he has built up over the years. That year he also ran several successful training workshops, providing a platform to share his knowledge and inspire other graphic design enthusiasts to reach their full potential.

In 2024, he had the privilege of being chosen as a Cohort 9 Fellow in the #AFFCameroon programme after applying 4 times in a row and being selected the 5th time. This opportunity enabled him to benefit from high-quality training in fact-checking, reinforcing his commitment to excellence and accuracy in the field of blogging and news in Africa. As a Cohort 9 Fellow, he says he took part in in-depth training in fact-checking, delivered by seasoned experts in the field. This training enabled him to acquire solid skills in critically analysing information and verifying its accuracy, which is essential in the world of blogging and disseminating information online. He explains how he uses his work to educate in the field of Fact-checking, both in whatsApp groups and when speaking on social networks.

As for current and future projects in this area, Fabrice plans to organise several training workshops to teach participants how to create impactful visuals to counter hate speech. These workshops will focus on using graphic design techniques to promote positive messages and counter the spread of misinformation and hate speech online.

He is committed to continuing to write graphic fact-checking articles on his blog, as well as on other platforms, and will also run training sessions on how to write graphic fact-checking articles. These articles will be aimed at demystifying misleading information and providing the public with factual and visual analyses to help them make informed decisions.

Together with members of his cohort, they aim to create their own fact-checking platform, facthunters.com. This platform will serve as a centralised fact-checking resource, offering users access to accurate and detailed analyses of the information circulating online. The aim will be to provide a reliable and transparent alternative to traditional sources of information, helping to promote a culture of responsibility and veracity in the sharing of information on the internet.

Dans cet article, nous mettrons en lumière ceux qui, dans leurs différents domaines, ont choisi d’incorporer ou d’amplifier leurs connaissances en matière de factchecking dans leur travail et ceux qui, grâce au programme, ont été en mesure de créer leurs propres plateformes de vérification et de démystification de l’information au sein de leurs communautés respectives. Les lignes ci-dessous mettent en évidence certains boursiers qui se sont démarqués positivement pendant et après la formation;

LES SUCCESS STORIES DE #AFFCAMEROON

Donald Tchiengue, #AFFCameroon Cohorte 5

Badal Fomoh Boursiere #AFFCameroon Cohorte 5

The Cameroon Diaspora Dialogues initiative has been on a mission to bring together Cameroonians living abroad to engage in conversations about conflict transformation and peacebuilding, while exploring the diaspora community’s prospective roles in influencing the ongoing conflict in Cameroon

Since its inception in November 2022, the Cameroon Diaspora Dialogues initiative has been on a mission to bring together Cameroonians living abroad to engage in conversations about conflict transformation and peacebuilding, while exploring the diaspora community’s prospective roles in influencing the ongoing conflict in Cameroon. Through diverse activities that span town halls, panel discussions, and cultural initiatives, the project has successfully fostered a space for dialogue, solidarity, and collective action.

Building Bridges: From reflection town hall meetings to footballing for peace

The journey began with a Diaspora Town Hall Meeting in Berlin, held at Makenene Restaurant, where the initiative was introduced to the local Cameroonian community. The event aimed to raise awareness about the ongoing conflict in Cameroon and brainstorm potential roles for the diaspora in contributing to peacebuilding efforts. Participants from various backgrounds and perspectives exchanged their thoughts on advocacy, peace, and possible collaborations. The discussion provided valuable insights into how the diaspora could use its influence to help mitigate the crisis.

‘On est fou de foot’ is a popular Cameroonian statement meaning ‘ we are crazy about football. In 2023, the focus shifted to sports as a unifying platform. The Cameroon Diaspora Football Calendar was created with the goal of documenting football teams in Berlin. This project helped us engage with the diaspora in a cultural dynamic understanding underlying pinings and dynamics of running football associations as migrant groups in Berlin. Our final output was not just the calendar but the year-long engagement process in this football subject engaged the football community in meaningful discussions about the conflict and the role sports can play in peacebuilding. By bringing together athletes and fans, the calendar became a symbol of unity while sparking conversations about the conflict in Cameroon. The project was a successful example of using a shared passion for football to fuel dialogue and action.

Panel Discussions and Moderated Events: Amplifying Voices

In 2024, the initiative expanded its reach with online panel discussions that included a wide range of voices from the diaspora. These virtual events featured Cameroonians of various ages, genders, and cultural backgrounds, ensuring diverse representation and perspectives. The panels discussed not only the political and social dimensions of the conflict but also the role of the diaspora in contributing to peace efforts. These discussions became a platform for diaspora members worldwide to exchange ideas and reflect on how they could engage in peacebuilding back home. Featuring in these prominently were the subject of online hatespeech and prospective roles the diaspora can play in mitigating misinformation and disinformation.

In addition to online engagements, the r0g office in Berlin hosted two moderated events titled “Navigating Bamenda”. These events featured special guests from Bamenda, Cameroon, who shared firsthand experiences of living and working in the heart of the conflict. Nduku, a community mobilizer and activist, shared a hopeful and resilient message about the spirit of the people living in Bamenda. Stella Mbuh, a journalist, spoke about the challenges of reporting from within the conflict zone, shedding light on the role of media in peacebuilding. These events provided invaluable perspectives and sparked important conversations on how the diaspora can support the people on the ground.

Expanding Outreach and collaboration : The Osnabrück Town Hall

In November 2024, the initiative took another step forward by organizing a physical town hall event in Osnabrück, Germany. Together with local partner organisation: Bridge builders e.V, the one day event was yet another moment of encountering Cameroonians of all works of life along other Africans living within the Osnabrück area. This event focused on engaging Cameroonians in the city of Osnabrück in dialogue about the conflict in Cameroon. It provided a platform for attendees to share their perspectives on the crisis and explore potential solutions as a community. The event fostered an environment of open discussion and unity, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in addressing the challenges facing Cameroon.

A Continued Commitment to Peacebuilding

While the journey has been full of challenges, including the diverse views within the diaspora logistical hurdles, and a scorching difficulty in mobilisation, the Cameroon Diaspora Dialogues initiative has made great strides in fostering unity, collaboration, and awareness. By engaging the diaspora through various activities, from town halls to football initiatives and panel discussions, the project has created opportunities for diaspora members to contribute meaningfully to conflict transformation in Cameroon.

The initiative has also provided invaluable opportunities for diaspora members to engage with one another, learn from the experiences of those living in Cameroon, and collaborate on potential solutions for the crisis. The Cameroon Diaspora Dialogues is not just about raising awareness, but also about creating pathways for actionable change. It is about amplifying the voices of those living abroad and ensuring that the diaspora plays an active role in shaping the future of Cameroon. By using online platforms, live streaming and digital tools, we strive to encounter or reach out to Cameroonians living abroad irrespective of geographical location.

Challenges

In the Defyhatenow Cameroon Diaspora Dialogue Initiative, everything has not been a bed of roses. One of the main challenges we face so far has been mobilizing participants. Many Cameroonians abroad are already juggling numerous responsibilities, from paying bills to sending remittances home, making political engagement a lower priority. On top of this, we face financial constraints. Without a dedicated funding allocation for the diaspora initiative, we had to make the most of a limited budget, which certainly made things more creative than we would have liked. It’s easy to imagine the potential if there were a clear and sustainable fund for this cause.

Cultural differences also presented some challenges, particularly when it came to timekeeping. “Cameroonian time” is a very real phenomenon, and punctuality at events often became a bit… flexible. Collaborating across different time norms required extra patience and understanding. Additionally, the fear of expressing opinions on sensitive political topics remains prevalent, even among those living abroad. Many participants tended to be cautious, and it’s understandable given the delicate nature of these discussions.

With a little more support from Cameroonian embassies abroad, we believe we could overcome some of these challenges and foster a more open and engaging dialogue.

Looking Forward

As the Cameroon Diaspora Dialogues initiative moves forward, there is a continued commitment to fostering unity and collective action within the diaspora. With a focus on expanding outreach, strengthening partnerships, and creating more opportunities for meaningful engagement, the initiative aims to build on the successes of the past two years and continue advocating for peace and stability in Cameroon.

The journey is far from over, and the potential for positive change is immense. Through collaboration, solidarity, and dialogue, the Cameroonian diaspora can make a powerful contribution to the ongoing peacebuilding efforts in their home country. Together, the Cameroon Diaspora Dialogues will continue to pave the way for encounter, dialogue ,exchange and calling to action in view of a long lasting solution to the conflict in Cameroon.

We are excited to draw your attention to a groundbreaking event: the first-ever collaboration between the Pan African University Institute of Governance, Humanities and Social Sciences (PAUGHSS) and #defyhatenow. This initiative is all about raising awareness and fostering a culture of peace in Cameroon and across Africa. By bringing youth together to champion peace, the event will empower them and other individuals to take meaningful action in their own communities. Through this partnership, PAUGHSS and #defyhatenow are setting a powerful example of how collaboration and collective effort can create sustainable peace. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this event will have on both local and global scales.

In today’s world, where conflicts and tensions continue to plague nations, it is crucial that we take proactive steps to create a culture of peace. By fostering dialogue and understanding among diverse groups, we can begin to bridge divides and address the root causes of violence. This event serves as a shining example of how we can work together towards a common goal: a peaceful and prosperous society for all.

In his August 2024 remarks on the 25th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace, the President of the UN General Assembly Mr. Dennis Francis called for a collective and continued action by various stakeholders such as governments, the UN system, youth organizations, academia, civil society, development institutions and media. More importantly, we recognize the relentless technical and funding efforts that the UN agencies and development partners in Cameroon and across Africa are making to ensure attainment of peace amidst heightening political tensions. These efforts echo that attaining peace entails going beyond conflict resolution to include bettering human lives through respect for life, socio-economic empowerment, education, and good governance.

Hence, the Pan African University cannot overstate the significance of education in nurturing African future leaders who would embody empathy, collaboration, good governance, and cultural tolerance, for the achievement of the continent’s stability. This corresponds to the UN’s emphasis on the ideas of peace and the culture of peace that needs to be cultivated in the minds of children and communities through formal and informal education across countries and generations.

The primary objective of this event is to raise awareness among youth about the significance of a culture of peace. The event will provide them with valuable insights and practical skills that will enable them to become agents of change in their communities. By targeting students of the Pan African University, located in Yaoundé and Buea, this event aims to reach a wide audience and inspire them to take action for peace.

Expected outcomes for this event centers around increased awareness of the importance of cultivating a culture of peace, exchange of ideas on the best approaches to sustainable peace, increased cultural tolerance among the diverse cultures in Cameroon and across Africa and the increased advocacy for policies that support peacebuilding, understanding and the respect for fundamental human rights.

This event is open to state authorities, United Nations agencies, diplomatic corps, development partners, media, academics, civil society, and university students from the Pan African University and University of Yaounde I and II.

During the two-day event, participants will have the opportunity to attend workshops and panel discussions on various aspects of peace building. These sessions will cover topics such as conflict resolution, reconciliation, social cohesion, and the role of youth in peace processes. Through interactive discussions and hands-on activities, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of peace as a foundation for sustainable development.

Furthermore, the event will emphasize the need for youth to become active participants in peace processes. By encouraging youth to take action in their communities, these conversations will foster a sense of ownership and empowerment in the participants.

The event will equally advocate for policies and programs that support peacebuilding among communities. By engaging with local policymakers and stakeholders, participants can gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that exist in promoting a culture of peace in Cameroon, in Africa and the world too. This advocacy work is crucial in ensuring that actions taken during the event have a lasting impact beyond the immediate time frame.

The collaborative event between PAUGHSS and #defyhatenow is a remarkable initiative that aims to create a culture of peace in Cameroon and Africa. By engaging youth and promoting dialogue and understanding, the event aims to foster inclusive societies and pave the way for sustainable peace. Urging all to take this opportunity to participate and contribute to the journey towards a more peaceful and harmonious world. Let us defyhateNOW and create a future where peace, empathy, tolerance, acceptance and love prevails.

Participants are expected to leave the event with a renewed commitment to promoting peace in their own communities. They will have gained valuable skills in conflict resolution and peacebuilding, which they can apply in real-world scenarios. Despite leaving the event with newfound skills and motivation, participants may face challenges such as resistance from community members who may turn out to be reluctant to change but the strategy is to let them see that positive change is possible and that everyone can contribute in making that happen because we all have a role to play in building a peaceful and secure environment for everyone to live and thrive in.
