In a world where divisive narratives and misinformation can quickly escalate tensions, initiatives like #defyhatenow play a crucial role in fostering peace, understanding, and resilience. The #defyhatenow creed serves as a guiding principle for individuals and communities working towards these goals. Let’s explore the essence of this creed and how it can help us build bridges in an increasingly polarized world.

The Essence of the Creed

At the heart of #defyhatenow is a commitment to positive change. The creed encapsulates values and actions essential for peacebuilding:

Promote Empathy and Understanding: One of the core tenets of the #defyhatenow creed is empathy. Understanding diverse perspectives and recognizing the humanity in others is fundamental to addressing conflicts and preventing hate speech. By fostering empathy, we can create a culture of respect and inclusivity.

Encourage Critical Thinking: The ability to critically evaluate information is vital in the digital age. The #defyhatenow creed emphasizes the importance of media and information literacy. By teaching individuals to question sources, verify facts, and recognize biases, we empower them to make informed decisions and resist the spread of false information.

Advocate for Open Dialogue: Open and honest communication is key to resolving conflicts and building trust. The creed encourages dialogues that embrace differences and seek common ground. By providing platforms for discussion, #defyhatenow creates opportunities for collaboration and mutual understanding.

Stand Against Hate Speech: Hate speech can fuel violence and division. The #defyhatenow creed calls on us to actively stand against hate in all forms. This means not only refraining from using harmful language but also challenging and reporting hate speech when we encounter it.

Foster Community Engagement: Community is at the heart of peacebuilding. By engaging local communities and leveraging their unique strengths and perspectives, #defyhatenow ensures that peace initiatives are sustainable and culturally relevant. The creed reminds us that everyone has a role to play in the journey toward peace.

Support Resilience and Healing: Conflict can leave deep scars. The #defyhatenow creed recognizes the need for support systems that promote healing and resilience. By providing resources and creating safe spaces, we can help individuals and communities recover and thrive.

How can you live the #defyhatenow Creed in action ?

Living the #defyhatenow creed does not require grand gestures; it starts with small, consistent actions:

Educate Yourself and Others: Stay informed about media literacy, and share your knowledge with friends and family.

Engage Respectfully: Participate in conversations with an open mind, and listen to understand, not just to respond.

Report and Challenge Hate Speech: Be vigilant and proactive in addressing harmful language online and offline.

Support Local Peace Initiatives: Get involved in community programs that promote peace and understanding.

The #defyhatenow creed is more than just a set of principles; it’s a call to action. It was crafted with pupils and students as the first target, but realising that we all have a role to play in our contribution to community peace building, we believe that everyone everywhere can use it. By embracing empathy, critical thinking, open dialogue, and community engagement, we can create a world where peace and understanding triumph over hate and division. Let’s commit to living these values every day, and together, we can #defyhatenow

Cameroon Diaspora Dialogues Panel Discussion

For the last two years the #defyhatenow diaspora initiative has sought to achieve inclusion for diaspora perspectives on the conflict mitigation in Cameroon.

February is youth month in Cameroon. Over 70 percent of Cameroons population is below the age of 35. As in most African countries, the youth in Cameroon sit on the crossroads of crisis: from pressure to violent extremism with the political conflicts, to irregular migration patterns to the world etc. In special tribute to the many young people of Cameroon who work towards reconciling peace and fighting hate speech, our diaspora dialogue this month shall focus on young people too.

We shall specially consider the special role of Cameroon based outside Cameroon; their perspectives on transforming the conflict in Cameroon and the particular roles young people play.

#defyhatenow

#AgirPourLaPaix

To mark the celebrations this year, #defyhatenow is running activities in the North West and South West Regions, as well as the three northern regions of Cameroon.

Youth in Cameroon are today celebrating the 58th Youth Day 2024, usually marked by a series of sociocultural and economic activities nationwide. On the D-day, that is February 11, a civilian march past with children of school going age, universities, sociocultural and political groups hold in all 360 subdivisions, 58 Divisions and 10 Regions of the country. Another main feature of Youth Day is the traditional Head of State’s Message to the Youth during a live simultaneous broadcast on national radio and TV.

This year, as in the past, #defyhatenow through its implementating partner, Civic Watch, is engaging young community leaders in several parts of the country on issues relating to the current challenges faced by the country. Top on this list is hatespeech, which social scourge threatens the core values and fabrics on which our nation is built. From the South West, North West, Centre to the Northern parts of the country, peacebuilding actions happening in these Regions are aimed at building the capacities of youth peace advocates, raising awareness and educating the masse on the dangers of hatespeech and its resultant violence on the society as a whole. This is how we saw the Youth Day 2024:

Bamenda: Peace Weavers Trained, Released for Community Impact!

Over 30 Community Peace weavers met from February 1 to 3, 2024, in Bamenda, headquarters of the North West Region for their second meeting. Cohort 1 members are made of leaders of youth associations, peace advocates, faith-based and tribal group leaders from the North West and South West Regions. For three days, guest trainers joined our team to share knowledge on topics such as identifying and countering hatespeech locally, leveraging social media for campaign visibility, collaborating with local authorities to run peacebuilding initiatives, spotting mis/disinformation online and curbing their spread. At the end of the training, fellows are expected to host pass-it-on sessions in their respective communities for more impact. The high mark of the gathering was a #HateFreeAbakwa peace march from Custom Junction to the Regional Assembly, where they were received by a delegation led by the Commissioner for Economic Development, Honorable Awunti Ghejung.
Civic Watch, the host organisation of the #defyhatenow initiative in Cameroon on February 9, 2024 signed a Memorandum of Understanding – MoU with the Cameroon National Youth Council – CNYC. As part of activities leading to the 58th Youth Day celebration in Cameroon, CNYC organised a Youth Development Forum with youth leaders from different parts of Africa. It is equally during this solemn gathering with a cross section of government ministers present, that the signing of MoU with four institutions happened, among which Civic Watch, represented by its Founder, Ngala Desmond Ngala. The overall expectation is to run capacity building, sensitisation and community mobilisation activities in different parts of Cameroon. Through youth advocacy, civic engagement and leadership, the collaboration aims at addressing the root causes of hatespeech, violence and violent extremism among young people. Both institutions aim to leverage on their joint prowess to foster the crusade for peace in the nooks and crannies of Cameroon.

Ngaoundere Hosts Zero Hatespeech Caravan and Intergenerational Dialogue

On the occasion of the 58th Youth Day, five community-based organisations operating in the Adamaoua Region organised a hate-free campaign on the theme: My fight: zero hate speech in Adamaoua! On February 7, 2024, the activity started with a sensitisation caravan, grouping young lovers of peace and sympathisers drawn from different parts of Ngaoundere. The overall event sought to foster the spirit of social cohesion, community tolerance and integration among inhabitants of the Region. The Lamidat of Ngaoundere hosted an intergenerational dialogue during which community members freely shared ideas on core values needed to enhance peaceful coexistence among the population. The public discussion was also an opportunity to reflect on past relations, assess the present societal changes and trends, especially technology-based, as well as set the basis for inclusive development at all levels of the society.

Garoua: The Junction Town Where Peace and Tolerance Converge

Building on a capacity building training last year with community-based organisations from all three northern regions on the use of the #defyhatenow Social Media Hatespeech Mitigation Field Guide 2.0; the North Region is hosting a restitution session this February. Under the coordination of the Regional unit of the Cameroon National Youth Council – CNYC, five organisations initially trained by the #defyhatenow team will be engaging other youth on using the Field Guide as a conflict-mitigation tool in Garoua. About 50 participants, drawn from youth-led organisations, faith and tribal groups, student unions and secondary schools have been selected for the session. Popularly dubbed Garoua Pour Tous (loosely translated Garoua for all) the junction town of the northern regions is taking a public stance against all forms of hate and violence, a message voiced loudly by the youth.

Maroua: Youth Denounce Violence and Violent extremism

After Ngaoundere and Garoua respectively, the headquarters of the Far North Region; Maroua will equally take turn in championing youth-led activities under #defyhatenow. Five community-based organisations, bearers of messages of peace, will join forces for a campaign against hatespeech and violent extremism in the region. It should be noted that the Region recently witnessed resurgence in intercommunity conflict among the Musgoum and Shuwa Arab ethnic groups, which led to the loss of lives and destruction of property. The border region, close to neighbouring Nigeria and Chad, is equally one of those areas affected by the Boho Haram insurgency that led to youth radicalisation, mass displacement, as well as heavy casualties. These youth-led organisations have therefore committed themselves to address the underlying causes of issues affecting their communities by engaging their peers in what they do best: Peacebuilding!

#AFFCameroon: 3rd and last session for Cohort 9 Fellows

While dust will be settling on #YouthDay2024 activities after February 11, another group of young soldiers will be negotiating a decisive bend in their fight against hatespeech and fakenews. Cohort 9 Fellows of our Africa Factchecking Fellowship – #AFFCameroon will converge at the end of the month for their third and last onsite meeting. The quarterly training is currently hosting 20 Fellows, comprised of journalists, bloggers and community-based organisation leaders, who are gaining knowledge on advanced information verification using online tools. As Cameroon is fast approaching an electoral year, past experience from 2018 revealed that pre and post elections periods are usually marked by a rise in mis/disinformation, hatespeech and attacks mostly fuelled by tribal and/or political differences. As a result, #AFFCameroon is #defyhatenow’s contribution to ensuring safe digital spaces; promote healthy public discourse and civic engagement geared towards the sustainable development of Cameroon as a nation. Our Fellows are trained to map viral trends, curb the spread of false information and organise community educative sessions. It is therefore for this reason that we are banking on the youth of today, who are leaders of tomorrow!

On December 30th, 2023, the AYA Hotel in Addis Ababa buzzed with energy as 73 women came together for a crucial workshop: Women’s Mental Health, Resilience and Trauma Healing. Defyhatenow Ethiopia, partnering with the SheLeads Initiative, created a safe space for women to discuss the toll of recent struggles, learn coping strategies, and build resilience.

A Shared Burden:

Ethiopia’s complex history has deeply impacted women, leaving many facing post-war trauma, gender-based violence, and societal pressures. Recognizing this need, the workshop aimed to be a first step towards creating a wider conversation about mental health support, especially in vulnerable communities.

Building Knowledge and Resilience:

The day was packed with impactful sessions:

Mental Health Awareness & Coping Strategies: Led by Yodit Molla, this session helped participants understand mental health concepts, explore the specific impact of trauma on women, and learn practical coping mechanisms.

Building Self-Esteem, Resilience & Empowerment: Hewan Birhanu guided participants in identifying and utilizing their inner resources, fostering self-worth, and developing resilience to overcome challenges.

Advocacy & Awareness: This empowering session equipped participants with tools to advocate for mental health and gender equality within their communities and create awareness campaigns to challenge stigma and build support networks.

More Than Just a Workshop:

Beyond knowledge, the workshop fostered a sense of community. Open discussions, interactive activities, and games created a safe space for women to share their experiences, learn from each other’s strength, and connect on a deeper level.

Impactful Outcomes:

The workshop exceeded expectations! Not only did 73 women actively participate, but they left feeling empowered with tools to manage mental health challenges and advocate for positive change. Notably, a Telegram group with all participants was created to offer continuous support, follow-up, and a safe space for ongoing interaction.

Join the Movement:

This workshop is just the beginning. By sharing this story and encouraging open conversations about mental health and support, we can empower women throughout Ethiopia to build resilience, advocate for change, and create a brighter future for all.

211 Check has made significant strides in combating misinformation in South Sudan through extensive training, global recognition, and local engagement, reshaping the information landscape and empowering individuals to discern and counter false information.

Author: Emmanuel Bida Thomas

In a world inundated with misinformation, one platform stood tall in 2023, making waves in the fight against falsehoods. 211 Check, a fact-checking and information verification platform, made significant strides in its mission to counter misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech in South Sudan.

One of the notable achievements of 211 Check in 2023 was its acceptance into the International Fact-checking Network (IFCN). This milestone underscored the platform’s dedication to upholding the highest fact-checking and information verification standards. This recognition validated the credibility of 211 Check and positioned it as a key player in the global fight against misinformation.

In 2023, 211 Check’s impact reverberated across South Sudan, with a multi-year commitment to enhancing fact-checking through domain, hosting, and SSL subscriptions until December 2032. The platform’s dedication was evident through its extensive training sessions and webinars, engaging 34 trainers and webinar panellists and reaching over 500 training attendees, empowering individuals to discern and counter false information.

Throughout the year, 211 Check engaged in local activities to strengthen fact-checking in South Sudan. The platform conducted training sessions and webinars to capacitate journalists, students, and active social media users, enhancing their ability to discern and counter false information. These efforts were crucial in empowering individuals to make informed decisions and contribute to a more informed and engaged society.

The impact of 211 Check’s work in 2023 extended beyond its immediate activities. Countering misinformation and promoting fact-checking made the platform play a pivotal role in fostering trust and reliability in the information landscape of South Sudan. This, in turn, contributed to a more informed public discourse and empowered individuals to access accurate and reliable information, aligning with the platform’s vision of creating a society where such information is easily accessible and widely shared.

The platform’s efforts to provide a platform for fact-checkers, offer editorial support and training to journalists, and enhance the quality and health of online information have reshaped the information landscape, fostering a society where accurate, reliable information is easily accessible and widely shared.

As 211 Check continues to lead the charge against misinformation, its vision of creating a South Sudan where truth prevails and individuals are empowered to make informed decisions is becoming a reality. The platform’s dedication to enhancing fact-checking and countering false information has not only reshaped South Sudan’s information landscape. Still, it has also set the stage for a future where misinformation holds no power.

Looking Ahead:

As we reflect on 211 Check’s achievements in 2023, it is evident that the platform has made significant strides in its mission to combat misinformation and disinformation in South Sudan. The impact of its work has been felt not only locally but also on the international stage, positioning 211 Check as a beacon of truth and reliability in an era plagued by misinformation.

About 211 Check:

211 Check, led by Defyhatenow, a National Nongovernmental Organisation (NNGO) registered in South Sudan, has steadfastly committed to enhancing the quality and health of online information in the region. The platform’s objectives included providing a platform for South Sudanese fact-checkers to publish articles and reports, offering editorial support and training on fact-checking to journalists and content creators, and countering false information through fact-checking and verifying information.

Social Media: A Mitigating Tool Against #HateSpeech and #Disinformation

Owing to the upsurge in hate speech, incitement to violence and mis/disinformation both online and offline which has negatively affected the peaceful fabric on which the country was built on, posing yet an unresolvable threat to peace, social cohesion and fundamental values of our nation. Social media has increasingly been used as a tool to fan the flames of tensions and conflicts in Cameroon as many have suffered from attacks such as harassment, defamation and bullying on the different platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and so on). Social media has also given rise to the creation of online communities, where users can connect with others to share similar interests or experiences.

The National Endorsement Day (#NCED) 2nd edition organised under the patronage of the Ministry of Arts and Culture and in partnership with #defyhatenow/ Civic Watch, aims at bringing together digital and cultural actors from Cameroon and the diaspora around a dialogue table to share experiences and best practices on ways youths and everyone can use social media responsibly. The growth in the use of social networks and their impact on competitive intelligence prompted the organisation of this event to highlight the challenges of digital networks. Meanwhile, the idea behind #NCED is to bring together young people, artists, entrepreneurs, businesses and the state to explore digital opportunities in a globalised economy thanks to online platforms. The theme of this edition is dubbed: “Social Networks at the Heart of Economic Intelligence: Challenges and Opportunities for Youth, Culture, and Business”. It shall be taking place from July 21 – 22, 2023 at the African Business Center and the Ubuntu Cultural centre, Friday and Saturday respectively.

The #NCED will bring together about +250 participants during the two days conference, including local authorities, digital professionals, entrepreneurs, digital enthusiasts, students, and civil society actors. The objective of this event is to enlighten Cameroonian youths and cultural actors on the different styles of content creation, partnerships, presenting the relevance of new digital professions and reinforcing a synergy of actions to reduce the negative effects or use of social media. The expected impact is the promotion of new online behaviours conducive to employment, self-employment, the valorization of cultural works and actors, and to engage other stakeholders (organisations/institutions) on ways to combat the unethical use of social networks and all the scourges that can be found on the internet. The media, the press, bloggers, grassroot organisations, and independent journalists are greatly expected to grace the event and give it the boost necessary.

#defyhatenow works on providing community-based and data-driven solutions to the problem of hate speech, disinformation and misinformation online and offline. The initiative equally works on enhancing the capacities of primarily youth and civil society organisations to counter hate speech and promote peace through various ways; culture, interfaith dialogues, discussions or even sport. We focus mostly on community-based, women & youth-led, civil society & media oriented organisations by amplifying their VOICES, for them to champion peace initiatives both on/offline towards building a #HateFreeCameroon.

That is why #defyhatenow shall be represented during this 2nd edition by Ngala-Desmond, Tchiengue-Donald and Mbong Vera as they shall be sharing on the role and impact of initiatives fighting #Disinformation and #HateSpeech on social media, to talk on understanding the basics of economic intelligence in a fast paced world and share on what #defyhatenow does in her contribution to eradicate #HateSpeech and #BuildingPeace in Cameroon, respectively. They shall be joining other tech and cultural experts to share perspectives on how to make the social media world beneficial and safe for all everywhere.

Favoriser le partage d’innovations entre les journalistes et les médias de tous pays ;

Passer des rencontres virtuelles aux rencontres réelles ;

Constater l’impact des projets menés sur le terrain ;
