Hacks/Hackers Nairobi – Monitoring Hate Speech & Drones for Journalism

Monitoring Hate Speech & Drones for Mapping Inequalities
The Hacks/Hackers community in Nairobi has a monthly meet-up to discuss pertinent issues, brainstorm and collaborate on plausible solutions.

Hacks/Hackers Nairobi will tackle #HateSpeech in Kenya on Monday (Aug 29), when it hosts debate by Rise Above Tribe, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission and #DefyHateNow at Nairobi Garage from 6pm onwards.

Why hate speech? Incitement to violence was a major issues in Kenya’s previous elections, and is again a growing concern in the run-up to the 2017 elections.
As we approach the 2017 elections, hate speech becomes a great concern as we reflect on the skirmishes that marked the General Elections 10 years ago.

The panel will discuss among other things:
• How much progress have we made in the fight against hate speech?
• Do online initiatives to address hate have resonance offline?
• What are the challenges faced by government and civil society in their quest to rid hate in our everyday and electoral discourse?
• Can techies, citizens and journalists help to curb hate speech?
We will also have a panelist discussing the use of drones in mapping inequality. Can we use visuals to tell a story about how the other side lives?
We will also learn about how the Sudan Evidence Base and Data Literacy Program is contributing to informing public policy.
Our panelists are from Rise Above Tribe, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), #DefyHateNow, Unequal Scenes and Tuvalabs. We invite you to join us in these discussions on Monday 29 August 2016, 6 – 9 pm at Nairobi Garage along Ngong Road to participate in these discussions.
