World Environment Day

According to the UN since the beginning of this century, the world has witnessed about 40 major conflicts and 2,500 disasters. These conflicts and disasters and major conflicts have compound poverty and make it harder to achieve sustainable development. Let’s endeavor to maintain peace.

The environment is also massively affected by these conflicts because as conflicts engulf communities the environment is neglected. Communities are focused on their security and peace which in turn means that no one pays attention to the environment and its resources. These are the resources that are our livelihoods. There is a very strong link between the quality of life and how communities draw on and manage the natural resources available to them. When there is uncertainty that means there is less quality of life.

There is widespread recognition and acceptance that the Earth’s resources are finite and that they operate in the context of a single yet complex and interrelated system. Steffen et al. (2004:2) state: the environment at the scale of the earth as a whole – the passing of the seasons, the vagaries of weather and climate, the ebbing and flowing of river systems and glaciers, the rich diversity of life in all its forms – has been something within which people have had to operate, subject only to great forces of nature and the occasional perturbations of extraterrestrial origin.
