Peace. Tech. People. Art.

#defyhatenow Kenya operates at the intersection of peace, technology, people, and art to develop lasting solutions for sustainable peace, with a primary focus on the East African region.

Global Action for Peace-Building Initiative

#defyhatenow in Kenya is implemented by the organisation Global Action for Peace-Building Initiative (GAPI) which is legally registered under the NGO Coordination Act as an NGO.

The main objective is to create awareness of the responsible use of social media platforms and discourage the use of hate speech and words intended to incite feelings of contempt, hatred, violence, or discrimination against a group or community in digital and physical fora.

Programs

Our programs empower journalists, media professionals, and communities with tools to counter hate speech, misinformation, and digital threats while promoting peace and responsible digital engagement.

Peacebuilding & Community Resilience

Peace begins at the community level. We support grassroots peacebuilding efforts by amplifying voices that advocate for dialogue, social cohesion, and conflict resolution. Our initiatives address emerging threats to peace, including climate-related conflicts, ideological tensions, and intertribal disputes. Through both online and offline engagement, we promote narratives of unity and resilience, empowering local changemakers to strengthen their communities.

Countering Hate Speech & Disinformation

Hate speech and disinformation fuel division, violence, and distrust within communities. At #defyhatenow Kenya, we work to counter harmful narratives by mobilizing civic action, promoting responsible online engagement, and providing data-driven tools to identify and mitigate the spread of misinformation. Through digital campaigns, fact-checking initiatives, and community dialogues, we empower individuals to recognize and challenge divisive content, fostering a safer and more informed society.

Media & Information Literacy for Journalists & Communities

Access to technology alone is not enough—understanding how to use it responsibly is key for journalists shaping public discourse and grassroots communities engaging with digital platforms. Our digital and media literacy programs equip media professionals with fact-checking skills, ethical reporting practices, and online safety strategies while empowering communities to critically assess information, counter mis/disinformation, and navigate social media responsibly.

Advocacy & Sustainable Action

Sustained impact requires collaboration, policy engagement, and long-term investment. We work with government bodies, civil society, and international partners to advocate for policies that promote digital rights, counter hate speech, and protect online freedoms. By mobilizing resources and enhancing partnerships, we ensure the sustainability of our initiatives, creating lasting solutions that empower communities to build a more peaceful and inclusive society.

Campaigns

Our campaigns drive awareness, counter mis/disinformation, and promote responsible digital engagement to build safer and more inclusive online spaces.
